BUILDING PRODUCTS FOR A BETTER FUTURE

People always want to know more about our products, and we’re always happy to provide information. One question that comes up often is whether or not our peel-and-stick underlayment offers slip resistance. The short answer is that it does—but if you want to learn more about peel and stick in general, plus the slip resistance that Epilay’s products offer, you can read more below.

What is Peel and Stick underlayment?

Here at Epilay, we offer three different kinds of peel and stick underlayment:

  • EpiStik Plus, which is our heavy-duty peel-and-stick option
  • EpiStik SA-250, an advanced peel-and-stick underlayment featuring a unique 3-layer design
  • EpiStik I&W, which is uniquely designed to provide excellent protection against ice dams and moisture

Each of these products offers slightly different features that make them more suitable for different applications. For example, if you need extra protection against ice dams that form around the edges of a roof or flowing water along roof valleys, EpiStik I&W is a great choice.

Beyond that, each of these peel and stick products serves the same purpose: They’re all designed to provide an extra heavy-duty alternative to roofing underlayment, one that self-adheres to create a fastener-free, watertight bond to the roof deck. You can use them to cover the entire roof, or as we talked about above, use them in only in the areas that need extra protection.

Do Epilay Peel and Stick Underlayments Offer Slip Resistance?

Two of our products—EpiStik Plus and EpiStik SA-250—offer our unique GripWalk surface. This is a specially designed top layer that provides high traction, making it easier to walk across it without slipping—even when there is condensation or moisture on the surface. Additionally, this layer is a light gray shade, which makes for a much cooler working surface than your usual black asphalt roofing paper.

How Does GripWalk Contribute to Roofing Safety?

Construction in general is one of the most dangerous jobs out there—and roofing tops the list of the most dangerous parts of construction. The reason why? Slips, falls, and trips that lead to injuries or even death considering that a slip can lead to a fatal fall from a high rooftop.

In providing a high-traction surface, Epilay underlayments with GripWalk can help you reduce the number of slips—and that in turn will reduce the number of falls and injuries that happen when working on rooftops.

How Does Synthetic and Peel and Stick Stack Up to the Alternatives for Slip Resistance?

In general, there are three different types of underlayments: Synthetic (which includes peel-and-stick), rubberized underlayment, and asphalt roofing paper. If you want slip resistance, asphalt roofing paper is right out—it’s known to be slippery, especially when wet.

Both rubberized underlayment and synthetic underlayment offer more traction. However, whereas rubberized underlayment offers traction by virtue of being rubberized, most synthetic underlayments build on this even further by offering a top layer specifically designed to increase traction and reduce the incidence of slips and falls.

The Technology Behind GripWalk’s Slip Resistance

Each of Epilay’s peel and stick products features a layered design—and with EpiStik Plus and EpiStik SA-250, it’s the top layer that offers slip resistance. It’s made from non-woven polypropylene, which offers both durability, plus a bit of texturing to enhance its anti-slip properties.

Improve Your Roofing Crew’s Safety with Epilay Peel and Stick Underlayment

There you have it! Both EpiStik Plus and EpiStik SA-250 offer the GripWalk surface, which is designed to offer slip resistance. It’s a crucial feature to have, especially considering that roofing is the most dangerous part of construction.
