Here at Epilay, we’re always innovating. That’s why we’re pleased to announce ProtecKote, which is a brand-new hybrid urethane roof and deck coating. This coating is easy to use, plenty versatile, and ideal for rooftops that need extra protection against water infiltration.
Ready to learn more about this new product? Below, we’ll show you ProtecKote’s key features, how you can use it, and more.
1. What is ProtecKote?
ProtecKote is a great product if you’re looking for waterproofing solutions. It is a two-component, fast-curing hybrid urethane roof and deck coating designed for application to roof decks. Once it cures, it forms a flexible, watertight membrane.
2. ProtecKote’s Key Features
Not only is ProtecKote’s polymer-rich formula watertight once cured, but it also comes with a variety of other features that roofers will appreciate:
- Abrasion resistance and extreme durability
- High resistance against UV degradation
- A low VOC, environmentally friendly formulation
- Easy application, high flexibility, and a fast curing time
3. ProtecKote Offers Excellent Adhesion
ProtecKote’s high adhesion is one of the things that will appeal most to roofers. Not only does it form a strong bond with the substrates for which it is recommended, but you can also apply it to wet and damp surfaces. In other words, you can minimize the delays that so often come with waiting for rooftops to dry out after rain or heavy dew.
4. ProtecKote Dries and Cures Fast
One of the great things about ProtecKote is that it cures quickly. At 77 degrees F, it’ll fast-cure in about 60 minutes. A full cure takes a maximum of seven days (often only 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather conditions), at which time it will be ready for light foot traffic.
5. Versatile Surface Compatibility
ProtecKote is ideal for a variety of surfaces and materials, including:
- Built-up roofing (BUR) systems
- Cap sheets
- Clay roofing tiles
- Concrete
- Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)
- Metal
- Plywood
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
- Spray polyurethane foam (SPF)
- Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO)
6. Application Tips
The installation process for ProtecKote is easy. While this coating can be applied to damp or wet surfaces, it’s best to make sure that the roof substrate is clean, free of dirt and debris, and dry before you apply it. It’s a good idea to power wash the roof deck beforehand to make sure that all dust and debris are gone.
You should also perform an adhesion test before the full application to make sure that the ProtecKote will perform as expected.
Lastly, make sure to do any repairs and pre-stripe all flashing and penetrations before you apply ProtecKote.
Mixing ProtecKote
Since ProtecKote has a two-component formulation, you’ll need to mix Part B (which comes in the bucket’s lid) into Part A until you get a consistent texture.
Applying ProtecKote
Apply ProtecKote with a brush, roller, or sprayer to all areas of the roof deck. This product should be applied in a minimum of two coats to achieve a minimum 22-mil thickness. Give ProtecKote at least four hours between coats, and wait between 24 and 48 hours for a full cure.
Keep in mind that humidity will affect cure times, with curing taking longer in humid environments.
Cleaning Up ProtecKote
Cleanup is easy! Just wipe down tools with mineral spirits or paint thinner to remove the dried coating. Soap and water will work if the coating is still wet.
7. Safely Storing ProtecKote
ProtecKote has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture when you store it unopened and according to recommendations. It should be stored out of direct sunlight, undercover, and away from extreme temperatures (between 45 degrees F and 120 degrees F).
Once mixed, ProtecKote should be used within 90 minutes at temperatures of 68 degrees F, or 45 minutes if temperatures exceed 86 degrees F. When applying ProtecKote, be sure to use protective gloves and safety glasses. If this product comes into contact with the skin or eyes, wash thoroughly with water.
